Homecoming 2019 Recap

Homecoming is a long-standing tradition in schools all over America, but here at MSD there is something about it that makes it extraordinary. From spirit week to pep rallies to the volleyball and football games, homecoming week at MSD reflects the school's core values and pride. The excitement for Homecoming builds up even months before the event happens, which is why when late October comes around, many students and staff look forward to the week to have fun and participate in an iconic experience.
The Student Body Government (SBG) voted "Orioles in Space" as this year's homecoming theme. During the week, students had the unique opportunity to show their spirit and creativity by participating in themed dress-up days and class competitions. For Homecoming 2019, the dress-up days were "Orange and Black Day," "Throwback to the 80's Day," "Animal Day," "Out-of-this-World Day," and "Class Colors Day."
To celebrate the start of one of the favorite times on campus, MSD-Frederick Campus had a kick-off event on Monday morning followed by MSD-Columbia Campus' pep rally later in the afternoon. A sea of students and staff dressed in orange and black brought the whole school together and led the Orioles off to a great week.
Homecoming Weekend kicked off on Friday evening with two exciting high school volleyball games, an unforgettable senior night for our volleyball team, and the traditional pep rally. The junior varsity team won both sets handily (25-18, 25-16), and the varsity team prevailed after five nail-biting sets (25-17, 24-26, 26-24, 17-25, 15-6). Following the varsity game, the pep rally featured many different festivities such as the "Orioles Fight Song" performed by seniors Thalia Guettler and Anevay Patterson with junior Hanna Johnston-Shaw as the drummer, high school class enthusiasm competitions, skits, and A-Z ASL stories. The eventful evening closed with Superintendent James E. Tucker announcing the 2019 Homecoming Royalty Court.
Homecoming Day was full of enjoyment and camaraderie as it dawned bright and early on Saturday morning. Booths featuring student organizations and local businesses such as International Orioles, class fundraisers, Jr. BDA, Patty's Cakes, and Deafroots filled the Behrens Pavillon area with a variety of great food, jewelry, arts and crafts, and more.
Before the football game, Homecoming King Amaree McKenstry and Queen Thalia Guettler were crowned. Freshman Prince Zion Ortiz and Princess Amber Virnig, Sophomore Prince DeMontae Joseph and Princess Citrine Lummer, Junior Prince Enow Otto and Princess Crystal Salit, Senior Prince Truth Dorsette and Princess Sascha Tansky were also introduced during the royalty ceremony. Kindergarteners Ashton Sims and Eva Heras had the honor of being the 2019 Homecoming Crown Bearers.
The annual halftime favorite performance by the Lil' Orioles and cheerleading team brought great spirit to fans and players. The varsity football team beat the Virginia Spartans 20-14, marking their twenty-first straight win on Homecoming Day. After the game, the seniors on the cheerleading, cross country, and football teams were recognized for their contributions to their respective programs.
The SBG concluded a memorable Homecoming week with a semi-formal dance on Saturday evening. The dance was filled with great music, wonderful food, and good times for all.
A special recognition and thank you goes to the students from Julie Bourne's Graphic Design class that designed the covers for this year's Homecoming program book. The front cover of the program book was designed by Tyler Zorn and the back cover was created by Josiah Armstrong-Allen and Miguel Pavao. A big thank you also goes to the Student Body Government for their hard work in choosing the theme, organizing spirit week, and planning Homecoming events.
